I'm nearly done shooting for Chapter 20.  I have all key scenes written, or heavily outlined, save for one, and it's kicking my butt.

I'm at a loss as to how I handle Matthew's death.

That's right, folks.  The monster I created and then took on a life of his own is proving to be a problem still.  I know the aftermath stuff; that's easy, and I'm looking forward to having Marsha put Jan in her place (the elder woman will NOT be enjoying her dowager role).  It's the actual death scene.  Normally, everyone's all lovey and such.  That does not suit Matthew at all, considering no one likes him, other than Jan.  I can't see Jefferson sobbing over his father's passing, and Marsha will be doing all she can not to dance a jig on his grave.  The grandkids won't exactly be heartbroken either.

So, yeah.  Writer's block.  It sucks.  Off to go read old sim_spiration prompts to see if something sparkers my creativity.

I know how you feel. I found a solution to the same problem: Just let them die. If it doesn't feel right to give him a lovey-dovey farewell, then by all means don't. Don't be afraid to let an unliked character die an unlikeable death--if that makes any sense.

That does make a lot of sense. I think I've come up with a solution (at 3AM, none the less), and Matthew's going to die as a he lived: being an insufferable, meddling tyrant. I'll sketch the scene out before I shoot; after all, once he's gone he's gone.

Well, it's going to be awkward for the characters as much as it is for you - because as much as Jefferson and Marsha dislike Matthew, I can't see them outwardly rejoicing when he dies - it would be tacky, Jan is probably there and actually mourning, and it would probably feel rude to them. I think the thing to do is let it be awkward, because that's how it would be in real life.

Rose said it better than I did and I totally agree :)

It is going to be awkward for everyone - I just haven't been able to figure out how to write it. I think I've got my solution, having him lecturing his family about their faults in the moments before he goes, and now I just need to sketch it out a little before I play and shoot.
