Myshuno Prompt: Matthew and Jan watch their descendants after their deaths

Name: Some Things Never Change
Characters: Matthew, Jan
Rating: Everyone
Summary:  Matthew and Jan haven’t changed much…
Notes: Myshuno Prompt #1 (Matthew and Jan watch all their descendants after their deaths).  Could be considered canon, as this is how I see my "Great Beyond" where everyone goes when they pass on.  Will not, however, be appearing in any chapters.
Word Count: 614

My Card

“Hand me the paper, would you, Jan?” Matthew asked, as he shook his head.  “It’s a damned shame that this is the only way we find out what’s going on.”
“I know,” replied his wife as she passed the newspaper across the table to her husband.  “One would think that you parents would have at least called on us, or your sisters.  We’ve certainly been here long enough.”
“Jan, we’ve been through this.  Mother and Father didn’t appreciate my efforts to keep the family on the straight and narrow while we were still part of the living world.  I didn’t expect them to welcome me to the Great Beyond with open arms.  As for my sisters, I could care less how Henrietta spends her days.  Anne is far too occupied with Eldon, and Diana with Lee.  You might as well face the fact that we’re spending eternity alone together.”
Jan sniffed as she sipped her morning tea.  The Great Beyond certainly was not what she expected.  Yes, she was young and beautiful again, but what fun was that if you couldn’t buzz about your friends and acquaintances, showing off that fact?
“Alexander will be joining us here soon,” Matthew announced, looking up from the newspaper.  “Looks like the move West weakened his heart.  And our grandson is getting married.”
Jan beamed.  “Well, it’s about time!  He certainly left making his mind up until the last minute.  Doesn’t he understand the responsibly of the heir?  Well, who is the lucky girl?”
“Her name is Cindy Selby.”
“I don’t recall any Selbys being part of the Portsimouth circle we were part of.  Are they new money?”
“No,” replied Matthew, his face twisting into anger as he read about his future granddaughter-in-law.  “She’s from the western part of the state; you know, the very rural part of the state.  Her parents and younger sisters died in the Simmish influenza epidemic.”
“One of three girls?” interrupted Jan, clucking disapprovingly.  “That doesn’t bode well for her producing a son.”
“Oh, it gets worse, Jan.  The only reason she didn’t die as well is that she was in New Sim City, trying to make her way as an actress.  And now she works at a speakeasy, singing jazz.”
Jan gasped and dropped the teacup she was holding.  “An actress!  And singing at a speakeasy?  Matthew, he can’t!  It’s entirely inappropriate.  We must stop him!”
“And how exactly are we supposed to do that, Jan,” Matthew asked his wife wryly.  “We can only observe from here.  Had I had more foresight and not moved the family cemetery, we could at least scare the girl to death.  But you know that our ghostly forms can’t venture past the bounds of the property where our bodies lie, no matter how freely we can move about the Great Beyond.”
“Well, I don’t like it.  I don’t like it one bit.”
“I don’t either, Jan, but there’s nothing to be done.  Now, perhaps you’d like to hear about what our other grandson has been up to.”
“Cyrus?  Is he still being ridiculous about horseless carriages?”
“No, I’m referring to Elizabeth’s son, Thaddeus.  Apparently, he and Calla Menon have been behaving entirely inappropriately in the back seat of a car.”
“How inappropriately?”
“About as inappropriately as two unmarried adults can act.”
Jan groaned.  “At least tell me he’s planning on marrying her.”
“Neither of them seem disposed to the institution of matrimony.”
Jan’s jaw tightened as she closed her eyes.  “You were right, Matthew.  It all went to pot after we died.”
“And now there’s not a damned thing we can do to stop them from ruining the Bradford name.  All my hard work for nothing.”
