Thank you. Nicky is pretty great, and you’ll be seeing more of him and Alice in future chapters.

Yay a new update! Just what I needed on a day when I'm sick and bored. :)

I loved this update despite the fact that there was a lot of hardship in it. It really feels like your sims are suffering. The opening montage of how the stock market crash and bank failures were affecting some of the extended relations was really well done.

Nicky is absolutely adorable! I already love his relationship with Alice and I'm really glad that Marsha was able to make her a coat. They are going to be adorable together (and lol at James taking Cindy's sucker bet).

Yay for twins! They are both adorable and you must be absolutely ecstatic to finally have hair colors other than brown in the main line! Does this mean that Nicky has a red recessive? It's nice to see Cindy finally over her fear of babies and getting to enjoy their early years.

Yikes at Sterling being shot and Viola's reaction! I read that scene as a drabble but it was even more painful to see it play out in the story. I can understand her being upset but keeping Nicky and his cousin from playing with each other is really unfair. Poor little Nicky! He really is very serious and adult like for his age. I love the fact that he wants to be a doctor. I foresee that coming in handy when WWII rolls around.

I am really glad that Sterling has found a decent solution to James' job troubles! I know that James was really unhappy with his job once prohibition ended and this seems like a good solution for everyone. Do you actually have him employed as working for Sterling in the game then?

Great chapter Heidi! I'm looking forward to seeing how Vi reacts to Sterling's plan and to seeing Nicky and his friends as teens. :D

:D Glad the update make your day a little better.

The restrictions have made some aspects of the game more difficult, but not too bad. The opening’s honestly one of my favorite parts, since so many of those families don’t really get into the story much anymore.

I always seem to say this, but Nicky might be my favorite heir to date. Alice is fantastic, and I can’t wait to show more of their relationship and how it grows. It’s great how the whole family accepts her. Poor James…he’s going to have to buy Cindy a very nice coat when it’s all said and done.

Twins are a handful, but I’m excited about them. It’s very nice to have different hair colors, yes (I haven’t had blonds since spares Anne and Diana back in gen 4). Yes, Nicky has red as a recessive. Cindy really does like being a mom, now that she’s more comfortable in the role.

Yikes indeed. There were a lot of repercussions from the shooting. Viola’s reaction is legitimate, but she’s going too far by keeping Nicky and Shirley apart. Nicky has 0 playful points, and he is too serious for his age. He will make a great doctor, and yes, there is a bit of foreshadowing there.

It’s a relief to have James out of the criminal activities. He may only have 1 nice point, but he’s a good person at heart. In game, he has quit the Criminal career and the next time I play the Alcott house I’ll have Sterling hire him, so yes, he will be employed by his brother-in-law (I’ve never had a Sim employed at a business before so I’m curious to see how it works).

Thanks you! I’m excited to write/play all those things and share them with the rest of you.

I loved this update. I think you dealt with the repercussions of the depression really well, especially within the family and the effects on personal relationships and the choices people have to make it tough times.

Thank you Katee. It's been a lot of fun in a way to deal with how harder times have affected the family, and what happens when you have to make choices that you otherwise wouldn't have.

How delightful! What a wonderful update, brilliant as always. It was so nice to sit with my Bradfords again. I love the nuances and family struggles brought on by the times. You tell the story in such an honest and forthright way. I want to strangle Viola. Man this takes me back to the civil warall over again and my poor Patrick. But her reaction is realistic to her personality I suppose. Philly's dying was bittersweet. I was sad to see the last of her generation go yet, it felt wrong her being the last, all alone, surrounded by a new generation who knew so little of the life before. It's hard to explain. I'm glad she's with her Meadow and brother. This was just lovely and a great eding to my week :)

Thanks! I try to make the family dynamic as realistic as possible. What’s going on between Viola and James is mean to evoke memories of what happened during the Civil War era with Patrick and his family, so I’m glad you went there. But yeah, Viola does tend to blow things out of proportion. It’s just part of who she is.

Phily being the last to go was bittersweet indeed. She was so in tune with what everyone she cared about was going through, yet she was the one to outlive them all. I totally get what you’re saying about how it’s wrong she was the last one. It is nice to know that she’s near those she loves, and don’t be surprised if she turns up in another project of mine.

I’m glad you enjoyed.

Finally catching up woot!

I really liked the opening, with all the spares/cousins suffering. Well, not the suffering part, but showing how much things changed in just a short time, since the stock market crashed and everything went to hell.

...Wow, a member of gen 5 died before all of gen 4 did. Poor Menons.

Ouch on Cyrus. The one thing that slightly bothered me about this update is that no one has offered Cyrus a job. As much as James has issues with his, at least he still has one, but Cyrus doesn't - so why didn't Sterling ask Cyrus, who is also Viola's brother, to manage the store?

Where DOES Nicky get the seriousness from? Poor little kid, but it really makes sense, as he's old enough to understand that things are bad and why they are so bad, and it does sometimes affect people for the rest of their lives. I suspect he'll be a very thrifty adult, always saving for a rainy day and such.

Awww, Alice is sweet. I like her already!

Huh, is Alice going to leave when the Depression's over? Or will she stay with the relatives?

Yup, James is totally going to lose that bet. Too bad. :P

Phily. :( It was her time, but...sadface.

It's not an easy choice, but I can't blame James for choosing to take care of his own family. Still, gambling...ouch.

Yay babies! So how big did gen 7 turn out to be? And are you done or are you going to have more kids?

So did Nicky actually roll Chief of Staff as his LTW? Have you even rolled his aspiration yet? Or is that based on his one true hobby, which is...Science? *curious* What if he wants something completely different when he actually gets his LTW? Though him being a doctor could also work into being a combat doctor during WWII, I notice.

Uber ouch on Sterling getting shot, though I'm quite glad you decided not to kill him!

While I think Viola is right that James's work is dangerous, I don't think she's right that it was his fault - because Sterling was definitely the one who proposed the lunch, and getting shot really had nothing to do with James's work, as the guy who had the gun was just looking for someone rich, not for a criminal. They weren't even near the gambling hall when it happened, for that matter.

And while I can understand if she doesn't want her children near her brother, Nicky is just a boy and definitely doesn't deserve to be separated from Shirley. I could deal with what Viola's doing if, say, she refused to allow Shirley to go to James's house but allowed James to come see Shirley at her house. But this way is just hurting everyone, including her, as she's so caught up in her hatred - much as her mother-in-law was - that she can't see that everyone, including her parents, her kid, her nephew, her husband, and her brother, are all unhappy.

Yay toddlers! :D

Yay for James finally getting out of the criminal business! This is muchly of the good.

Lovely chapter, can't wait for the next one!

Yay for catching up!

Thanks! I had to find a way to sum up how the randomization of family funds and job losses played out.

Yeah. Jason Menon’s death was entirely plot, though I did age him up to cause his death (if you’ve read Anne of Green Gables, I was echoing Matthew’s death from the shock of the bank failing).

I honestly hadn’t thought too much about how Cyrus losing his job would play out with the rest of the family. The only rebuttals I have to that is that his wife Georgianna did have a job and they were surviving, and that at the time Sterling didn’t need a new manager for the store because he thought he could trust the one he had, and when the time came for a new one, the James/Viola issues and solving it was the first thing on his mind.

I have NO IDEA where Nicky gets his seriousness from. I’ve checked lineage, and though Cindy’s got 3 playful James has 9 so it shouldn’t be so extreme. It does work to my advantage, as so many people who grew up in that era ended up as very serious people, and it helps to explain why Nicky’s always worried about how his family’s doing.

Alice is a sweetheart. I’m glad you like her.

I’m not fully decided as to what’s going to happen with Alice’s family. But know that whatever does happen, she’ll be going to college in Portsimouth at least.

Yes, James took a sucker bet. I don’t think he’s going to mind in the end, though.

Sadface on Phily indeed. But yes, it was her time, considering it’s soon to be gen 5’s time to go.

It was not an easy choice James had to make, and it really bothered him a lot. For his lack of niceness, he’s a good man at heart.

Babies are adorable! Gen 7 has (or will have) 15 members when it’s all said and done. I’m done, saving the 2 that were conceived during the past rotation and will be born in the Spring rotation (William & Octavia and Raymond & Mildred).

Nicky’s rolled Fortune, but I don’t know what his LTW will be yet (normally I don’t roll until they actually teenify, but Lark wanted him for the Tudor hood so I rolled early). The doctor thing is based on his hobby (science, yes – with that serious a boy how could it not be), and plot for WWII. He’s going to have crazy skills and friends by the time he’s ready to work, so I figure he can do both, or just be a doctor and get permaplat via the lifetime meter (or a genie lamp I have stuffed in the attic).

Yeah, Sterling lucked out, because when I planned this plot originally he was a gonner.

Viola’s not thinking from a rational place at the moment. You’re exactly right – it’s not James’ fault, but it’s always easier to blame someone you know when something goes wrong. And again you’re right about what Viola should do regarding Shirley and Nicky. She is acting a lot like Melanie did. Hopefully she’ll come around before too much damage is done.

Yay toddlers indeed! And what cuties they are.

I’m very glad that Sterling gave James a path out. I’m not sure he’s really suited to being a store clerk, but at least it’s an honest job.

Ah, but you had Jason Menon die plat, at least. Poor dude.

The Cyrus stuff makes sense, yeah, but I sitll feel bad for him.

I figured Alice would make it there for uni, but it'll be interesting to see the teen years.

Fortune? You've had a lot of Fortune heirs. And I'm sure he can do both.

And Jason may not be a great clerk, but he's a good manager, so he's got SOME skills.
